The CRG Open Access Policy

The Centre for Genomic Regulation is committed to providing Open Access to all its published research believing that fast, free and unrestricted access to scientific information is a key driver of progress, which ensures that research benefits the widest possible audience and contributes to accelerated discovery, public enrichment and multi-disciplinary innovation. As a publicly funded institute, the CRG is dedicated to making sure that its research outputs are publicly available.

Purpose

The CRG Open Access Policy follows global developments towards open access to scientific research and is in line with open access mandates of several major external funders of the institute: the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This policy supports and ensures compliance with mandates and requirements of the funders.

Scope and Applicability

This Policy applies to all researchers affiliated to the CRG and refers to the publications resulting from research done at the CRG.

This Policy entered into force on  1 April, 2016.

Definitions

Open Access means making research publications freely available online. There are no payment restrictions on Open Access publications.

There are two types of open access, Gold and Green.

Gold Open Access: the publication is openly available on the journal's website as soon as published. This route includes open access journals, or a subscription journal with an open access option. The peer-review process remains the same.

Green Open Access the publication is openly available through an Open Access repository.  The peer-review process of publishing a paper with a subscription journal remains the same. However, the post-print, or last accepted version of the paper (after peer review) should be sent to the documentalist to be deposited in the UPF repository.  Most of the Life Science journals allow Green Open Access after a 6 or 12 month embargo from the final publication date, but allow only the post-print version to be archived as Open Access. However, this may vary from one publisher to another. This option does not have any extra cost.

Guiding Principles

  1. The CRG recommends making publications Open Access via the Gold Open Access route. If this not possible, the Green Open Access route is available provided  the embargo does not exceed six months after final publication date and the post print is summited to the documentalist.
  2. An electronic copy of research articles published in peer-reviewed journals in which researchers affiliated to the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) are listed as first or last authors will be deposited in an Open Access repository as soon as possible and not later than six months after the final date of publication.  The UPF repsository on the UPF website ensures compliance with all CRG funders and allows for standardized archiving process within the institute. Post-prints (after peer-review, but without journal’s formatting) should be sent to the CRG Scientific Documentalist no longer than 7 days after acceptance.
  3. The CRG strongly recommends that authors publish research articles with a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (CC-BY-NC) license, which permits a broad range of future uses without the requirement of seeking prior permission from the author(s), excluding the use for commercial purposes. This license requires attribution to the author(s).
  4. All external funding requests must include an estimate of Open Access publishing fees in the grant budget, provided that the funder allows it. All publications financed by past projects that did not include Open Access funding request are still expected to comply with this policy.

Implementation

All CRG members  are  expected  to  comply  with  this  policy  in  carrying  out  their  duties. CRG reserves the right to take appropriate action against any employee who violates this policy

Responsibilities

CRG researchers will be responsible for submitting their manuscripts so that they comply with the here described Open Access policy, as well as the Open Access policies of the relevant funding bodies.

The Scientific Documentalist will provide support and information for authors on all aspects of publishing in Open Access.
