Maria Pia Cosma received her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Genetics from the School of Medicine, ‘Federico II’ University of Naples, in 2000. From 1997-2000 she was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), Vienna, and postdoctoral fellow in 2000 at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM), Naples. By the end of 2003, she had established her first group at TIGEM in Naples, when she also became an EMBO Young Investigator (YIP). From 2004 to 2010 she was a Lecturer at the European School of Molecular Medicine, and she was an Honorary Associate Investigator at the Institute of Genetics and Biophysics (IGB), Naples, from 2009 to 2015.

In April 2010 she moved to Barcelona, Spain, to the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), as a Senior Scientist and as a Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) Research Professor. She has given many invited talks at major international conferences and Research Institutes. She has received several awards, including: the Marie Curie Excellence Award (2005) and the honor of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2007). She is a European Research Council (ERC) Grant awardee (2009), and a Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) Grant awardee (2010). She was elected as an EMBO Member in 2010.
