Marc Bataller, technician of the Gene Regulation programme at the Centre for Genomic Regulation, has been awarded a PhD with Distinction from the University of Barcelona. The prize was earned by his thesis, entitled “Characterization of the response of tumour cells to mithramycin”, which was the result of the research carried out by Marc Bataller at the Molecular and Cellular Biology Institute of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC).
The PhD Distinction is awarded to the best doctoral thesis in each department of the University of Barcelona. Bataller’s thesis, which triumphed over all of the other works submitted to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, presents an analysis of the mechanisms of cell death induced by Mithramycin SK. The work compares the effects of Mithramycin SK with those of Mithramycin A in human colon cancer lines, and demonstrated that Mithramycin SK is more effective as an antiproliferative agent.
