Roderic Guigó receives an "ERC Advanced Grant"

  • The ERC Advanced Grant is the most prestigious grant awarded to support scientific projects in Europe
  • The researcher submitted a project for the study of RNA, using techniques of massively parallel sequencing
  • The grant amounts to 2 million Euros over 5 years

The researcher Roderic Guigó, from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and professor at the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF), has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant, in the category of Life Sciences, the most prestigious grant awarded to scientists by the European Research Council (ERC).
By means of massively parallel sequencing techniques, Guigo’s project aims at identifying genetic and epigenetic factors that play a role in RNA maturation. The grant amounts to 2 million Euros over 5 years. These grants are awarded to a reduced number of researchers, which during their career have shown a high level of scientific excellence.
The selected project
The project, entitled "RNASeq: Massively Parallel Sequencing of RNA", aims at using the new and several techniques of massively parallel sequencing to study genetic and epigenetic effects on RNA maturation, focusing on non-coding regions of RNA and modification of histones. The project will also develop predictive mathematical models and will allow the development of a data analysis software to be distributed as free software.
About Roderic Guigó
Roderic Guigó got his PhD in Statistics in Barcelona and continued his research in the U.S., with stays at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard University and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Today is coordinator of the Genomics and Bioinformatics programme and head of the research group that bears the same name, at the CRG, and Associate Professor at the UPF.
