Gender microaggressions are subtle acts of sexism that reinforce gender stereotypes and unjust social norms. They can come from any gender and most of them are related to behaviour, competence, children or dress code. Microaggressions can be intentional or unintentional and are widespread in working environments including academia.
Sexual harassment is an unwelcome behaviour of a sexual nature and can be considered as a specific type of bullying, a behaviour in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person discomfort or injury.
All these acts and behaviours can lower feelings of well-being, produce physical and mental health problems and have a severe impact on women’s professional careers.
They cannot be tolerated.
