COURSES@CRG: Practical Summer Course: Modeling for Systems Biology
COURSES@CRG: Practical Summer Course: Modeling for Systems Biology
Sunday: As participants are not expected to have a modeler's background, Sunday optional sessions introduce basic concepts from elementary calculus, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and Matlab programming. An understanding of these concepts is highly recommended to be able to follow the course itself.
Monday: Deterministic systems - Modeling gene regulation, simple dynamical systems and bifurcation analysis
Tuesday: Stochastic systems - Formalism and consequences of molecular noise in biological systems, intrinsic versus extrinsic noise in gene regulation
Wednesday: Data analysis - Multidimensional scaling, pattern recognition and regression techniques
Thursday: Parameter inference - Local vs global optimization techniques, reverse engineering and optimal design of biological systems
Friday: Multicellular systems - reaction-diffusion models, spatial systems and pattern formation in biology

Registration
The number of participants is limited to 22, from which 11 places will be reserved for scientists from the PRBB and SystemsX. The remaining positions will be open to candidates from institutes worldwide. Priority will be given to researchers who are likely to use this basic modeling knowledge to aid their research.
General registration fee: 400 EUR (includes participation in workshop, use of computers and all necessary software to participate in the course, coffee breaks, lunches and a welcome dinner).
Registration is open until 03/05/2015.
Selected participants will be sent an email and asked to reconfirm their attendance no later than 06/05/2015. They will also be asked to pay the registration fee.
